[ dabble ] Humans of New York

To those who have never been to New York its residents seem to exist as the extras to a thousand different movies, shuffling along in the background of romantic comedies, alien invasions, disaster flicks, and everything filmed in between.

Life doesn’t quite divide people into main characters and extras though, and walking around New York are a few million individual characters all living their own story lines.

In 2010 photographer Brandon Stanton set out to document 10,000 New Yorkers and plot their pictures on a map, creating a pictorial census of the everyday people out on the streets. As he started clocking up the clicks the project started to take on a life of its own, with each picture carrying a story and each story representing an individual.

Now two years down the track Humans of New York holds thousands of photographic stories,  and shows off New Yorkers in all their diversity.

Every picture tells a different story and yet every picture belongs to the same, much larger narrative – Humans of New York.
